2010 HHW Dates Announced

Improper disposal of household chemicals such as pesticides, paints, and motor oil in the garbage is dangerous and environmentally unsafe. Residents of Bergen County can avoid doing so by attending the Bergen County Utilities Authority (BCUA) Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) Collection Programs.

Eight collection events will be held in 2010 at three sites throughout the county. They are: Bergen Community College, 400 Paramus Rd., Paramus on Sunday, April 11, 2010; Sunday, June 13, 2010; and Sunday, October 17, 2010. Moonachie Location: BCUA, Foot of Empire Blvd., Moonachie on Saturday, March 13, 2010; and Saturday, July 17, 2010. Mahwah Location: Bergen County Campgaw Mountain Reservation, 200 Campgaw Rd; Mahwah on Saturday, May 15, 2010; Sat., Sept. 11, 2010 and Saturday, Nov. 20, 2010. Collection events begin at 9:00 a.m. and close promptly at 3:00 p.m. All HHW collection events are offered free of charge to Bergen County residents. Proof of residency is required at time of collection.

"Many materials gathering dust in our garages and basements, such as batteries, paints, and insecticides can safely be removed from homes and be recycled or disposed of properly at the BCUA's Household Hazardous Waste Collections," stated Acting Executive Director Richard Wierer.

According to BCUA's Richard Baroch, Solid and Special Waste Program Administrator, "We are encouraged by the number of people interested in safeguarding their homes. Attending these collections will make homes safer and the environment cleaner." For additional information about the collection event, including a listing of acceptable materials for collection, and directions, log onto www.bcua.org or call the BCUA Environmental Programs Hotline at 201-807-5825. The Bergen County HHW Collection Program is developed and run by the BCUA's Solid Waste Division.
